“Parenting in families and the school success of migrant children”

Day seminar from September 21, 2019 as part of the integration project “Paths of success – clever children of strong parents”.

On Saturday, September 21, 2019, the AEF – Spanische Weiterbildungsakademie e.V. invited in cooperation with the Art and Education Forum Bonn-Rhein-Sieg e.V. to a day seminar in the course rooms of the AEF in Troisdorf. The event covered various topics related to the school success of immigrant children and the importance of parental participation and accompaniment of children on their educational path. In addition to working with official education statistics of the Federal Statistical Office of Germany, the main priority was self-reflection and the associated school experience of the parents, most of whom came from Turkey. Following the example of the pedagogy of Paulo Freire, the more than 25 seminar participants independently worked out the proposed topics in group work and discussion groups and actively discussed their own experiences as well as the wishes for the future.

The day seminar has shown that the German school system on the one hand discriminates against children with a immigrant background, and on the other selects between the social strata. A child with a immigrant background from a financially weak family has a much higher risk of finishing school without any school leaving certificate than their German classmates. The attendees were unanimous in their view that their children’s success in school plays a key role in the chances of success, which is why it is of particular importance and should be supported in all respects.

The day seminar has laid the foundation for understanding parental participation and accompaniment of children in the German school system, which is rather a process. Therefore the AEF – Spanische Weiterbildungsakademie e.V. and the Kunst- und Bildungsforum Bonn-Rhein-Sieg e.V. will offer further events of this kind in the course of the year 2019, in order to further increase the awareness of immigrant parents regarding this topic in order to be aware of possible traps and dangers of the German school system and in consequence a positive school success can be promoted.
